Award-winning Blancanieves (2012) is a delight from beginning to end. A dark and very Spanish take on the Snow White story, not only has it been filmed in glorious black-and-white, it is also silent. Occasional title cards move things along, but the expressive actors and the emotive score are what really make this soar. At times reminiscent of Dreyer, Bunuel, and Jodorowsky, Blancanieves is masterfully done, its mixture of moods creating a unique experience well worth savoring.
