Between the 1880s and the 1970s, thousands of people lived---and died---at what was once called the Oregon State Insane Asylum (where One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed). Over 3500 copper canisters containing the cremated remains of deceased patients are still unclaimed, and probably always will be. Photographer David Maisel has documented these ghostly relics, revealing an unexpected beauty while contemplating the transient nature of all things.
A documentary on the subject was released in 2011. The former hospital is now a museum.
